Trip to Door County

Up at 4:30 A.M. to prepare for departure, hopefully by 7:00 A.M. We are finally off to Door County, Wisconsin, which Pat has wanted to visit for, oh, about twenty years. After trying to do a timeshare exchange for several years without success, she decided, what the heck, let's just find a nice place to stay and go there. So, here we are, packing up the car with almost as much food and drink as clothes, and off we go. Actual departure time: 6:45 A.M. -- we beat our goal which is unusual for me. I tend to be overly optimistic about how long it actually take to pack up the car with almost as much food and drink as clothes, but, by cracky (a favorite saying of my Grandpa Comstock), we did it this time. Since retiring we do this sort of thing at least twice a year traveling to Florida for October and part of November, and then again right after Christmas for the "season". I guess we're just getting enough practice that we are getting better at it...

Iowa -- Cruising up I-35 to Des Moines and then over I-80 to Cedar Rapids. Iowa is about 99% corn fields now that ethanol has become popular. Oh, sure there is some room for the interstates, a few homes and businesses, a McDonalds or two and a couple of golf courses. Other than that, just row after row after row after row of c-o-r-n. It's unfortunate that someone didn't figure out the ethonal thing back in the 70's when gasoline first got tight. Maybe we wouldn't be in Iraq right now or thinking about striking Iran. Oil, oil, oil. Can't get along with it, can't get along without it...

Wisconsin -- Through Dubuque, across the Mississippi and into Wisconsin. Man, what a bunch of cows! You'd think all they do is make cheese in this state. Stopped briefly in Dodgeville, home of Lands' End, but didn't bother to go to the "factory" store. Saw signs for employment, so I guess they are doing okay since Sears bought them. Saw the outskirts of Madison and Green Bay and, presto changeo, there we were in Door County only ten or so hours after leaving Kansas City...

Now the fun begins.
